Tonight was Meet the Teacher Night, wherein each of our 28 students wandered down the halls and into our classroom with his parents to find his desk and greet the two teachers under whose tutelage he will learn this school year. After some good-natured cajoling by a colleague, I decided to wear my navy blazer for the event. It was the best decision I made all day. There is an certain manliness that comes with wearing a jacket. You stand a bit straighter, walk a bit taller, look others a little more squarely in the eye. Tactful humor arises naturally, and handshakes are executed with just the right amount of firmness--all of this somehow related to the jacket. I enjoyed many great conversations with parents and their children, including many people familiar with Michigan and the Detroit area. The world keeps getting smaller.
Later, as I walked out of school into the 111 degree (F) desert sunset (it was nearly 8:00PM), I was very tired. But the excitement of meeting the kids that will fill our classroom was infectious. I look eagerly forward to Monday--the First Day of School.
